How to start Happy Together
Happy Together is a side job in Cyberpunk 2077. You can pick it up very early in the game and it doesn’t task you too hard with challenging fights or difficult and long objectives. It’s an interesting and rather quick optional mission that further immerses you into the world of Night City.
The mission starts in Megabuilding H10 in Japantown in Westbrook. This is the building where V’s first apartment is. I say first because you can get more apartments all over Night City.
You will see a yellow mission icon above the two cops standing in front of the door of Apartment 0613 in Megabuilding H10. This is one floor below V’s apartment.
The cops are Juan Mendez and Nadia Petrova (very Bulgarian name, by the way). As soon as you approach them, the mission “Happy Together” will be activated and placed in your journal under the tab Sider Jobs.
Talk to the cops to find out why they are hanging out in front of this door. It turns out that they are concerned about their friend, and your neighbor, Barry, who is an ex-cop. He broke down after his best friend died and they are worried he might do something stupid.
After the short first conversation, Nadia will ask you to check on Barry and see if he is OK. You can do that right away or stall the quest and come back at it later. As far as my tests show, there’s no limit to how long you might delay this mission. It is, however, possible that Barry might “do something stupid” if you delay too much.
Knock on the door. Bary will not answer right away. You may want to try in a few hours. Skip time right in front of the apartment or just go play another mission and return later. If skipping time while in front of Barry’s apartment doesn’t work, go to your apartment upstairs and take a refreshing nap (and get the XP buff).
When the objective of the mission updates, knock on Barry’s door again. He will let you in this time.
The options in the dialogue are more about different reactions. They will not change the next objectives you get for this mission. Since I played my David Martinez build when I made the recording for this guide, I had plenty of Body attribute points, so I was able to go for the third option shown in the image above.
In this conversation, you will learn that Barry is mourning the loss of his best friend Andrew. You will also find out that Barry doesn’t want to open up to his two friends outside the door. Petrova “is not good with this stuff” and Mendez “just doesn’t get it”.
Ask Barry how Andrew died. And then choose the more empathic first option from the two main responses you have available. Barry tells V that Andrew died of old age.
After this conversation, you have two new objectives:
- Talk to the Cops
- Find Andrew’s niche before talking to the cops (Optional)
If you want to save Barry from “doing something stupid”, you have to do the optional objective first. The next section of the guide will continue from this point.
How to find Andrew’s niche before talking to the cops
You can complete the quest and get your XP and Eddies reward if you just go out the door and talk to the cops. However, the more interesting and positive outcome is if you invest a little more of your time to learn who Andrew was and why Barry is so sad about Andrew’s passing.
As I have explained in my DOs and DONTs Beginner Guide to Cyberpunk 2077, you can track the objectives of the same mission. Open up your Journal, select the Optional objective to be active and now you can click on the thumbnail of the map to the right to open up the map of Night City.
This is your next destination. The Columbarium in North Oak, Westbrook. As you arrive at this marked spot, Johnny Silverhand will appear.
When you take a look at the text on the wall, you learn that Andrew is a tortoise! It doesn’t matter what discussion you will have with Johnny here.
The text reads:
In loving memory of my best friend
ANDREW
You were a tortoise, but you listened like a person.
You were with me when grammy explained what was right.
You are the last memory of a better world.
Rest in peace.
Time to go back to Megabuilding H10 and talk to the cops again.
What choices to make next to keep Andrew alive
During your second conversation with Mendez and Petrova, you have to choose a few specific dialogue options if you want Barry to live. If you don’t, you’ll find out either by just making the different choices yourself, or reading the next segment of the guide.
Ask the cops what Barry told them about Andrew. Let them know that Andrew was a tortoise and a memento of his grandparent.
The blue dialogue lines are optional, as always, but the important one you have to choose to save Barry is “I visited Andrew’s Grave”. This is the only dialogue option that will keep him safe and alive.
The reward is slightly different depending on how you approached the mission. If you did the optional objective, you get a little more Eddies from the cops.
What happens if you choose differently
The only way to end this quest with Barry alive and the two cops not in tears is to visit Andrew’s Grave and let the cops know that Barry is mourning his tortoise.
If you choose to talk to the cops without completing the optional objective, the mission will still be completed, but with a lesser payment from the cops for you and with the death of Barry.
If you go to Andrew’s grave, but don’t tell the cops that you did that, the same scenario as above will play out and Andrew will end up dead.
Cyberpunk 2077 Happy Together mission Walkthrough
If you felt that the full-length guide is too complex, this is a simple-to-follow step-by-step walkthrough of how to start and complete the side job Happy Together in Cyberpunk 2077 and save and keep Barry alive.
Instructions
- Go to the Fast Travel terminal in front of V's apartment in Megabuilding H10.
- Take the stairs one level below and talk to the two cops in front of Apartment 0613
- Agree to talk to Barry, your neighbor, and knock on his door.
- Wait or skip a day and knock again. Barry will now talk to you.
- Go to the Columbarium in North Oak, Westbrook, and find Andrew's grave. Talk to Johnny as he spawns next to you.
- Go back to Megabuilding H10 and tell the cops about Andrew. Choose "I visited Andrew’s Grave".
- Follow them as they enter Barry's apartment and complete the quest.
- You can return later to see that the cops are not in front of the apartment and there is no yellow tape or blood stains or anything. You saved Barry!
Notes
This side mission does not reflect on the world or any other follow-up quests in Cyberpunk 2077. It is just a nicer outcome if you bother to go explore the Columbarium and learn about Andrew.
The payment you get from the cops upon completing the job is slightly different as well, but in the grand scheme of things, it matters little if you earn ~1000 or ~680 Eddies. You are not doing this for the money.
